The answer to this question depends almost entirely on what route you choose, and what you mean by “accountant.”

If you mean a fully qualified Chartered Accountant with CA Sri Lanka membership, you are looking at five to seven years of study, exams, and practical experience. But if you mean a qualified, employed accounting professional doing real accounting work for real clients, you could be there in twelve months.

Here is every route compared honestly, so you can make the right decision for your timeline, your goals, and your financial situation.

Route 1: Australian Taxation Specialist (Career Campus)

Timeline to first employment: 12 months Timeline to mid-level salary: 24 months Timeline to specialist level: 36 months

The Career Campus Australian Taxation pathway is the fastest structured route to professional accounting employment in Sri Lanka.

Level 1, the Professional Australian Taxation program, takes twelve months. Upon successful completion, students enter employment in the BPO and outsourced accounting sector at an indicative salary of LKR 85,000 per month.

Students then study Level 2 while working, for a further twelve months. During that time, they earn at entry level while building toward the Senior Tax Professional salary of an indicative LKR 250,000 per month.

Level 3, SMSF Specialist, takes a further twelve months and leads to an indicative LKR 500,000 per month at specialist level.

Total timeline from starting to SMSF specialist: three years. Income begins at month thirteen. This is the fastest route to employment of any accounting pathway available in Sri Lanka.

Route 2: AAT Qualification

Timeline to Foundation Certificate: 6–12 months Timeline to Professional Diploma: 2–3 years Timeline to employment in accounting: 1–2 years

AAT provides a structured progression from accounting technician foundation level through to professional diploma. Students in Sri Lanka typically complete the full AAT pathway in two to three years, with entry-level employment possible after the foundation or advanced stages.

Salary outcomes at AAT level stay modest in the local market: LKR 50,000 to 80,000 per month for technician-level roles. However, AAT also works as a recognised stepping stone toward ACCA, since it provides exemptions from some papers.

Route 3: ACCA Qualification

Timeline to first employment: 2–3 years (after Applied Skills papers) Timeline to full ACCA qualification: 4–6 years Timeline to ACCA membership: 4–6 years plus practical experience requirement

ACCA is one of the most globally respected accounting qualifications and is widely pursued in Sri Lanka. The thirteen-paper structure means most students take four to six years to complete the full qualification.

Partial ACCA completion, after the Applied Skills level, makes students employable in junior to mid-level accounting roles. Full ACCA membership, however, requires completing all thirteen papers and a professional experience requirement of three years in a relevant role.

Salary outcomes do rise significantly at full qualification, reaching LKR 150,000 to 500,000+ per month. That said, the timeline is long, and the investment in fees and study time is substantial.

Route 4: CIMA Qualification

Timeline to employment in management accounting: 2–4 years Timeline to full CIMA membership: 3–5 years plus practical experience

CIMA’s structure spans three levels: Operational, Management, and Strategic. As a result, most students reach full qualification in three to five years of study alongside employment. CIMA-qualified professionals work in management accounting, financial analysis, and corporate finance roles.

Salary outcomes run strong at full qualification, from LKR 200,000 to 600,000+ per month in corporate and multinational employers. Even so, the path is long and requires sustained commitment to passing exams at each level.

Route 5: CA Sri Lanka

Timeline to full qualification: 5–7 years Timeline to membership: 5–7 years including practical training contract

CA Sri Lanka is the Chartered Accountant qualification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka. It stands as the most prestigious local accounting qualification, and also one of the most demanding.

The pathway includes foundation, intermediate, and final examinations, combined with a mandatory practical training contract of three years with a registered training employer. Total timeline to full CA membership typically runs five to seven years.

Salary outcomes at full CA qualification top the local accounting market, reaching LKR 250,000 to 700,000+ per month. This reflects the prestige, rigour, and demand for qualified CAs in Sri Lanka’s corporate sector.

Route 6: Accounting Degree (State or Private University)

Timeline to graduation: 3–4 years Timeline to first accounting employment: 3–4 years plus job search

A commerce or accounting degree through state or private university provides a broad academic foundation in accounting and business. Graduation takes three to four years, after which graduates enter entry-level accounting roles typically paying LKR 50,000 to 80,000 per month.

A degree provides academic credibility and broad transferability. What it doesn’t provide, though, is the specialist, assessed competence in a specific area that drives faster salary growth.

The Right Timeline Depends on Your Goals

Want to enter employment as quickly as possible and build a specialist career in the growing Australian-linked BPO sector? The Career Campus pathway is the fastest, most structured, and most financially transparent route available.

Looking instead for the highest possible long-term ceiling and global portability in corporate accounting? ACCA or CIMA is the right investment, despite the longer timeline.

Prefer the most prestigious local qualification with the broadest corporate doors? CA Sri Lanka is worth the five to seven year commitment.

Either way, choose based on your actual goals, not on which qualification sounds most impressive.
